Our mission is to improve the quality of life for Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard-of-Hearing persons by providing a wide array of services that empower them to become fully integrated into the fabric of the Knoxville and East Tennessee communities.
What exactly are those services? We offer the following:
Our main function here at KCD is to provide high quality professional interpreting services for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard-of-Hearing communities. The financial resources generated by our hard-working interpreting staff allows us to operate our facility and to provide the below listed programs and services.
KCD offers after-hours (5:00PM-8:00AM and weekends) interpreting coverage for emergencies with our EmerCorps program. When emergencies happen and an interpreter is needed in the middle of the night, the EmerCorps program allows a coordinator to send an available interpreter to the assignment to provide effective and efficient communication.
If you are a Hospital or Emergency Personnel and need to request an interpreter for an after-hours emergency, please call (865) 579-0832. You will need to leave a message and our after hours coordinator will call you back quickly.
KCD supports the local Deaf-Blind community by offering our SSP Voucher Program. An SSP is a “Support Service Person” who volunteers his/her time to help Deaf-Blind community members with transportation to and from medical appointments, the grocery store, the pharmacy, the bank, or wherever community members need to go to shop or conduct their business.
Our voucher program provides each deaf-blind individual with a monthly set of vouchers; each voucher worth a set monetary amount. At each visit, Deaf-Blind individuals give their SSPs a voucher or two. SSPs then cash in these vouchers here at KCD to help defray the cost of gasoline, oil, and other transportation related expenses.
Stop for a minute and think about what it must be like to be deaf and blind. Yes, they are isolated! Without the wonderful SSP’s to pick them up and take them to where they need to go, Deaf-Blind people have difficulty getting out in the community.
Along with our on-site interpreting services, KCD now offers a Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) Program. KCD has a Community Room available for rent to host parties, gatherings, club meetings, etc. There is a $50 safety deposit plus a fee for use of the room. Persons interested in reserving the Community Room must contact Craig Lemak and come to KCD in person to fill out and sign the rental agreement. Payment is due at the time of reservation. Reservation requests must be made at least 15 days prior to event date.

KCD strives to offer ASL classes every Fall and Spring semester. Please, see the “Programs & Services > Sign Language Classes” page for more information about upcoming opportunities to learn conversational ASL!
Here at KCD, the professional development of our staff and contract interpreters is vital. We offer and host training workshops to help all interpreters continue to improve and develop their interpreting and professional skills, as well as earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to maintain their National Interpreter Certification (NIC).
If you are a Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) client, you may be referred to KCD for services such as Job Placement or Vocational Evaluation. Please, contact your VR counselor to discuss a referral.
